Freight is a term required to classify the transferral of items and is generally a commercial activity. Items are usually set up into various shipment categories before they are sent out.
This is dependent on various factors:
- The type of item being transported, i.e. a kettle could be expected to fit into the category 'household goods'. - How large the shipment is, both in terms of item size and quantity. - How long the item for sending will be in transit. - Shipments are usually marked as household goods, express, parcel, and freight Payloads.
Articles of furniture, art pieces, or like Cargo are mostly separated as household goods.
Very small business or personal shipments like envelopes are counted as overnight express or express letter goods. These shipments are not usually over a few pounds, and just about always journey in the carriers own packaging. Service grades are variable, based on the shippers choice. Express dispatches just about always go some portion of the way by aviation. An envelope might go coast to coast through the night or it can take many days, depending on the service choices and prices paid.
Bigger things like small boxes are regarded as parcel or ground shipments. These loadings are seldom over 100 pounds, with no single piece of the article weighing more than more or less 70 pounds. Shipments are always packaged, sometimes in the shippers packaging and typically in carrier-provided packaging. Service grades are again varying; but virtually all ground items will move approximately 500-700 miles per day, going sea-coast to seashore in approximately four days depending on origin. Parcel dispatches not usually move by air, and normally move via road and rail. Parcels represent the absolute majority of business-to-consumer (B2C) goods.
Aside from HHG, express, and parcel items, movements are referred to as freight shipments.
Less-than-truckload (LTL) freight:
The first category of freight article is less than truckload (LTL). LTL shipments range from 100 pounds to about 15,000 pounds, and are always much less than 28long. Unlike express or parcel, LTL shippers must provide their own packaging, as LTL carriers do not provide any packaging supplies or assistance.
Truckload (TL) freight:
In the United States of America payloads heavier than approximately 15,000 pounds are typically separated as truckload (TL) in that it is most economic to exclusively use a truck rather than share it in an LTL environment. A load is limited to the space available in the trailer -- nominally 48' or 53 long and about 100 inches wide and 106 inches high. Under the current U.S. truck pricing model, adding more to a load costs nothing more.
Schemes for increasing load size include: reducing truck equipment weights for example, by "light weighting" the equipment. How freight pricing works:
Appointments or notification before pickup or delivery: by default, carriers make pickups and deliveries in order arranged by geographic location (a route). If a shipment requires the carrier to call ahead, or schedule and appointment, the carrier will charge an additional fee for this service.
Another cost-saving method is facilitating pickups or deliveries at the carriers terminals. By doing this, shippers avoid any accessorial fees that might normally be charged for liftgate, residential pickup/delivery, inside pickup/delivery or notifications/appointments. Carriers or intermediaries can provide shippers with the address and phone number for the closest shipping terminal to the origin and/or destination.
Cargo insurance:
Whether a shipper deals directly with a carrier or uses an intermediary, the amount of cargo insurance coverage the carrier will be providing on the shipment must cover the cargo value. Shippers do not assume that full-coverage insurance is provided, as it almost never is. Shippers typically ask the carrier or intemediary about the procedure in place regarding freight loss or damage claims. Responsible carriers and intermediaries will always have additional insurance available for purchase and will have fast and easy ways to manage claims.
Freight packaging:
Unlike small parcel shipping via a delivery company like Federal Express or UPS, shipping freight has a much higher likelihood of damage. LTL companies pack lots of different types of freight onto lots of different trailers using forklifts and other heavy equipment, creating a harsh and dirty environment for freight. Other LTL shipments will be packed around and on top of a given customer's shipment; so all freight shipments should be packaged very carefully.

Shippers generally first see that they are employing the most effective type of carrier for their particular type of item: using an LTL carrier for an LTL consignment, for example.
