All Things Related To Trucking-Company-Freight-Class-Info

Freight is a term required to classify the transfer of goods and is occasionally a commercial activity. Items are largely formed into various shipment classes before they are transported.

This is dependent on many factors:

- The nature of the item being sent, i.e. a kettle might fit into the family 'household goods'.
- How large the object is, both in terms of item sizing and quantity.
- How long the item for transportation will be in transit.
- Dispatches are normally tagged as household goods, express, parcel, and freight Consignments.

Furniture, art, or alike Things are by and large separated as household goods.

Very small business or personal items like envelopes are viewed as overnight express or express letter goods. These shipments are not usually over a few pounds, and almost always move in the carriers own packaging. Service grades are variable, depending on the shippers choice. Express despatches nearly always travel some distance by air travel. An envelope might go coast to coast overnight or it may take numerous days, depending on the service alternatives and prices paid.

Larger shipments like small boxes are considered as parcel or ground shipments. These dispatches are seldom over 100 pounds, with no single piece of the object weighing more than around 70 pounds. Shipments are universally packaged, typically in the shippers packaging and every now and again in carrier-provided packaging. Service levels are again varying; but the majority of ground cargos will move almost 500-700 miles per day, going coast to seacoast in approximately four days depending on origin. Parcel payloads not usually travel by air, and commonly move via road and rail. Parcels make up the bulk of business-to-consumer (B2C) items.

Aside from HHG, express, and parcel shipments, movements are referred to as freight shipments.

Less-than-truckload (LTL) freight:

The first category of freight consignment is less than truckload (LTL). LTL shipments range from 100 pounds to about 15,000 pounds, and are always much less than 28long. Crating or other substantial packaging is required for LTL shipments due to the mixed freight environment.

Truckload (TL) freight:

In the United States of America despatches heavier than about 15,000 pounds are commonly separated as truckload (TL) in that it is most economical to exclusively use a truck rather than share it in an LTL environment.
TL shipments usually travel as the only shipment on a trailer and TL shipments usually deliver on exactly the same trailer as they are picked up on. Increasing shipment size has proven to be a significant opportunity for many companies - particularly large consumer product companies.

Strategies for increasing load size include: consolidating orders onto the truck using a Transportation management system. Here the "optimal combination of orders and stops can be used to fill out the truck. When shipping freightage, it is highly important to realize the facts about pricing, claims, and insurance.

How freight pricing works:

More dense items such as steel and machinery have low classifications such as Class 50 thru 85. Fragile or bulky items fall into freight classes 125 to 500, and pay higher shipment costs.

Inside pickup or delivery: requiring the truck driver to pickup or deliver inside a building a route takes longer to complete. The carrier will charge an additional fee for this service. Also, charges for additional insurance or literally hundreds of other possibilities may be added to the final freight bill. It is extremely important that the LTL shipper works with the carrier or intermediary to completely understand all of the requirements of a shipment in order for an accurate price to be quoted.

Cargo insurance:

About 10% of all freight shipments will experience some significant loss or damage. It is a common misconception that a freight rate includes full coverage insurance, when in fact a base freight rate typically includes only a bare minimum of cargo insurance. A shipper should always ask their carrier or intermediary what the insurance coverage is for every specific shipment. LTL shipments will often be insured for less than 25 cents per pound, and TL shipments will often be insured for only slightly more than LTL shipments. Most TL carriers have maximum cargo insurance of $100,000 for the entire load; but for a 40,000 load, thats only about $2.50 per pound.

Freight packaging:

Unlike small parcel shipping via a delivery company like Federal Express or UPS, shipping freight has a much higher likelihood of damage. LTL companies pack lots of different types of freight onto lots of different trailers using forklifts and other heavy equipment, creating a harsh and dirty environment for freight. Other LTL shipments will be packed around and on top of a given customer's shipment; so all freight shipments should be packaged very carefully.

Freight shipping summary:

Railcars may ship any bulk freight to several locations. Shippers sometimes first ascertain that they are applying the most effective type of carrier for their particular type of object: using an LTL carrier for an LTL payload, for example. While parcel carriers will accept LTL consignments, and LTL carriers will accept TL cargos, shippers will sometimes receive lower quality service at higher rates when carriers service freight that is "non-standard" for their particular company.

assuming the shipper has chosen the right type of carrier, the shipper then shops a lot of carriers in order to locate the most appropriate service and price for their article. Shippers seek out all-inclusive quotations that include all surcharges and accessorial expences.

after the shipper has chosen the mode and carrier and is readied to ship, they generally over-package their freight object and verify policy coverage, to minimize damage and claims.

Inexperienced shippers oftentimes use the services of a freight go-between or consultant to allow them locate the most appropriate carrier, service, and price for their shipments.
