Freight is a phrase employed to describe the transportation of goods and is usually a commercial operation. Items are always put into various shipment families before they are carried.

This is dependent on a lot of factors:

- The type of item being sent, i.e. a kettle could easily be put into the listing 'household goods'.
- How large the article is, both in terms of item size and amount.
- How long the item for transportation will be in transit.
- Consignments are commonly graded as household goods, express, parcel, and freight Consignments.

Pieces of furniture, artistic creations, or similar Cargo are generally sorted as household goods.

Very small business or personal things like envelopes are considered as overnight express or express letter shipments. These shipments are rarely over a few pounds, and almost always move in the carriers own packaging. Service degrees are varying, depending on the shippers choice. Express payloads almost always move some distance by air travel. An envelope may go coast to coast overnight or it will take many days, depending on the service choices and prices chosen.

Bigger items like small boxes are counted as parcel or ground dispatches. These items are seldom over 100 pounds, with no single piece of the consignment weighing more than approximately 70 pounds. Shipments are usually packaged, sometimes in the shippers packaging and typically in carrier-provided packaging. Service grades are again variable; but virtually all ground items will move approximately 500-700 miles per day, going sea-coast to coast in just about four days depending on origin. Parcel despatches seldom move by air, and often move via road and rail. Parcels comprise the majority of business-to-consumer (B2C) loads.

Other than HHG, express, and parcel dispatches, movements are described as freight shipments.

Less-than-truckload (LTL) freight:

The first class of freight payload is less than truckload (LTL). LTL shipments range from 100 pounds to about 15,000 pounds, and are always much less than 28long. Air cargo or air freight shipments are very similar to LTL shipments in terms of size and packaging requirements.

Truckload (TL) freight:

In the United States of America consignments larger than roughly 15,000 pounds are typically separated as truckload (TL) in that it is most economical to exclusively use a truck rather than share it in an LTL environment.
A load is limited to the space available in the trailer -- nominally 48' or 53 long and about 100 inches wide and 106 inches high. Under the current U.S. truck pricing model, adding more to a load costs nothing more.

Ideas for increasing load size include: consolidating orders onto the truck using a Transportation management system. Here the "optimal combination of orders and stops can be used to fill out the truck. When sending freight, it is extremely crucial to know about pricing, claims, and insurance.

How freight pricing works:

More dense items such as steel and machinery have low classifications such as Class 50 thru 85. Fragile or bulky items fall into freight classes 125 to 500, and pay higher shipment costs.

Another cost-saving method is facilitating pickups or deliveries at the carriers terminals. By doing this, shippers avoid any accessorial fees that might normally be charged for liftgate, residential pickup/delivery, inside pickup/delivery or notifications/appointments. Carriers or intermediaries can provide shippers with the address and phone number for the closest shipping terminal to the origin and/or destination.

Cargo insurance:

Cargo insurance only covers significant loss or damage to the cargo only. Carriers insurance does not cover consequential damages like lost sales or downtime on a production line. Also, carrier insurance does not cover the cost of returning damaged cargo to the shipper. Again, cargo insurance is very low and very tightly defined; so shippers must package shipments extremely well and be sure to clarify the specific insurance that will apply to each shipment.

Freight packaging:

Unlike small parcel shipping via a delivery company like Federal Express or UPS, shipping freight has a much higher likelihood of damage. LTL companies pack lots of different types of freight onto lots of different trailers using forklifts and other heavy equipment, creating a harsh and dirty environment for freight. Other LTL shipments will be packed around and on top of a given customer's shipment; so all freight shipments should be packaged very carefully.

Freight shipping summary:

Railcars could ship any bulk goods to numerous locations. Shippers usually first see to it that they are using the most effective type of carrier for their particular type of shipment: using an LTL carrier for an LTL item, for example. While parcel carriers will accept LTL consignments, and LTL carriers will accept TL loadings, shippers will often get lower quality service at higher rates when carriers service consignments that is "non-standard" for their particular company.

if the shipper has chosen the correct sort of carrier, the shipper then shops a lot of carriers in order to find the most effective service and price for their shipment. Shippers seek out all-inclusive quotations that include all surcharges and accessorial fees.

once the shipper has chosen the mode and carrier and is ready to ship, they commonly over-package their freight consignment and verify insurance policy coverage, to head off damage and claims.

Inexperienced shippers sometimes use the services of a freight intermediary or advisor to allow them locate the most beneficial carrier, service, and price for their cargos.
