Freight is a phrase required to describe the shipping of trade goods and is occasionally a commercial operation. Items are for the most part listed into various shipment classes before they are shipped out.
This is dependent on many factors:
- The nature of the item being transported, i.e. a kettle could be expected to fit into the class 'household goods'. - How large the consignment is, both in terms of item size and quantity. - How long the item for shipping will be in transit. - Cargos are typically graded as household goods, express, parcel, and freight Despatches.
Articles of furniture, artwork, or like Cargo are normally sorted as household goods.
Very small business or personal things like envelopes are looked at as overnight express or express letter shipments. These shipments are rarely over a few pounds, and just about always travel in the carriers own packaging. Service degrees are variable, based on the shippers choice. Express dispatches just about always move some portion of the way by air travel. An envelope can go coast to coast overnight or it can take many days, depending on the service selections and prices paid.
Larger shipments like small boxes are viewed as parcel or ground shipments. These loadings are not usually over 100 pounds, with no single piece of the cargo weighing more than approximately 70 pounds. Shipments are usually boxed, occasionally in the shippers packaging and typically in carrier-provided packaging. Service levels are again variable; but nearly all ground cargos will move close to 500-700 miles per day, going seacoast to sea-coast in roughly four days depending on origin. Parcel goods not usually journey by air, and often move thru road and rail. Parcels constitute the majority of business-to-consumer (B2C) payloads.
Other than HHG, express, and parcel despatches, movements are termed freight shipments.
Less-than-truckload (LTL) freight:
The first category of freight payload is less than truckload (LTL). LTL carriers trailers are typically 28' long and complete utilization of a 28' pup is considered capacity. Air cargo or air freight shipments are very similar to LTL shipments in terms of size and packaging requirements.
Truckload (TL) freight:
In the United States of America loadings larger than around 15,000 pounds are commonly classified as truckload (TL) in that it is most economical to exclusively use a truck rather than share it in an LTL environment. A load is limited to the space available in the trailer -- nominally 48' or 53 long and about 100 inches wide and 106 inches high. Increasing shipment size has proven to be a significant opportunity for many companies - particularly large consumer product companies.
Strategies for increasing load size include: precise calculation of the load within the equipment specifications. This is predominantly performed by taking demand from, for example, a Distribution Resource Planning system or a Vendor Managed Inventory system. How freight pricing works:
Each item has a class assigned to it based on the items density, loadability or mixability, value, and other factors. Freight classes range from 50 to 500, and generally indicate the percentage of the base rate that should apply. So class 85 freight should be charged 85% of the full rate between points A and B, theoretically.
Another cost-saving method is facilitating pickups or deliveries at the carriers terminals. By doing this, shippers avoid any accessorial fees that might normally be charged for liftgate, residential pickup/delivery, inside pickup/delivery or notifications/appointments. Carriers or intermediaries can provide shippers with the address and phone number for the closest shipping terminal to the origin and/or destination.
Cargo insurance:
Cargo insurance only covers significant loss or damage to the cargo only. Carriers insurance does not cover consequential damages like lost sales or downtime on a production line. Also, carrier insurance does not cover the cost of returning damaged cargo to the shipper. Again, cargo insurance is very low and very tightly defined; so shippers must package shipments extremely well and be sure to clarify the specific insurance that will apply to each shipment.
Freight packaging:
Unlike small parcel shipping via a delivery company like Federal Express or UPS, shipping freight has a much higher likelihood of damage. LTL companies pack lots of different types of freight onto lots of different trailers using forklifts and other heavy equipment, creating a harsh and dirty environment for freight. Other LTL shipments will be packed around and on top of a given customer's shipment; so all freight shipments should be packaged very carefully.

Railcars could ship any bulk commodities to several locations. Shippers normally first ascertain that they are employing the most appropriate type of carrier for their particular type of shipment: using an LTL carrier for an LTL object, for example.
