Useful Information About Air-Freight-Tx

Freight is a term used to classify the transfer of cargo and is generally a commercial activity. Items are usually formed into various shipment families before they are carried.

This is dependent on numerous factors:

- The type of item being channelled, i.e. a kettle would commonly be put into the listing 'household goods'.
- How large the article is, both in terms of item size and quantity.
- How long the item for shipping will be in transit.
- Payloads are occasionally categorised as household goods, express, parcel, and freight Dispatches.

Furniture, artwork, or similar Cargo are typically classed as household goods.

Very small business or personal items like envelopes are considered as overnight express or express letter goods. These shipments are rarely over a few pounds, and virtually always move in the carriers own packaging. Service levels are varying, depending on the shippers choice. Express consignments virtually always move some of the way by aviation. An envelope might go coast to coast through the night or it may take several days, depending on the service options and prices paid.

Larger things like small boxes are looked at as parcel or ground despatches. These despatches are seldom over 100 pounds, with no single piece of the object weighing more than roughly 70 pounds. Shipments are universally packaged, occasionally in the shippers packaging and typically in carrier-provided packaging. Service grades are again variable; but just about all ground dispatches will move approximately 500-700 miles per day, going sea-coast to seashore in approximately four days depending on origin. Parcel loadings not usually travel by air, and commonly move via road and rail. Parcels comprise the majority of business-to-consumer (B2C) shipments.

Other than HHG, express, and parcel dispatches, movements are termed freight shipments.

Less-than-truckload (LTL) freight:

The first family of freight load is less than truckload (LTL). LTL shipments are also often referred to as "motor freight". Crating or other substantial packaging is required for LTL shipments due to the mixed freight environment.

Truckload (TL) freight:

In the United States of America items larger than about 15,000 pounds are commonly sorted as truckload (TL) in that it is most economic to only use a truck rather than share it in an LTL environment.
A load is limited to the space available in the trailer -- nominally 48' or 53 long and about 100 inches wide and 106 inches high. Under the current U.S. truck pricing model, adding more to a load costs nothing more.

Programs for increasing load size include: precise calculation of the load within the equipment specifications. This is predominantly performed by taking demand from, for example, a Distribution Resource Planning system or a Vendor Managed Inventory system. When sending freightage, it is highly important to read up on pricing, claims, and insurance.

How freight pricing works:

More dense items such as steel and machinery have low classifications such as Class 50 thru 85. Fragile or bulky items fall into freight classes 125 to 500, and pay higher shipment costs.

Truckload (TL) carriers usually charge a rate per mile. The rate varies depending on the distance, geographic location of the delivery, items being shipped, equipment type required, and service times required. TL shipments usually receive a variety of surcharges very similar to those described for LTL shipments above. In the TL market, there are thousands more small carriers than in the LTL market; so the use of transportation intermediaries or brokers is extremely common.

Cargo insurance:

Whether a shipper deals directly with a carrier or uses an intermediary, the amount of cargo insurance coverage the carrier will be providing on the shipment must cover the cargo value. Shippers do not assume that full-coverage insurance is provided, as it almost never is. Shippers typically ask the carrier or intemediary about the procedure in place regarding freight loss or damage claims. Responsible carriers and intermediaries will always have additional insurance available for purchase and will have fast and easy ways to manage claims.

Freight packaging:

Unlike small parcel shipping via a delivery company like Federal Express or UPS, shipping freight has a much higher likelihood of damage. LTL companies pack lots of different types of freight onto lots of different trailers using forklifts and other heavy equipment, creating a harsh and dirty environment for freight. Other LTL shipments will be packed around and on top of a given customer's shipment; so all freight shipments should be packaged very carefully.

Freight shipping summary:

Railcars can ship any bulk freight to numerous locations. Shippers typically first check that they are using the most effective type of carrier for their specific type of item: using an LTL carrier for an LTL payload, for example. While parcel carriers will accept LTL cargos, and LTL carriers will accept TL consignments, shippers will commonly have lower quality service at higher rates when carriers service cargo that is "non-standard" for their particular company.

once the shipper has chosen the best type of carrier, the shipper then shops many carriers in order to locate the right service and price for their article. Shippers search out all-inclusive quotes that include all surcharges and accessorial fees.

when the shipper has chosen the mode and carrier and is ready to ship, they occasionally over-package their freight cargo and verify insurance coverage, to head off damage & claims.

Inexperienced shippers often use the services of a freight mediator or consultant to help them locate the correct carrier, service, and price for their loads.
